We talked about how she got her start, what the early days of Ailey were like as well as how she’s preparing for retirement.

Besides being in the presence of such an amazing talent, I loved hearing about her first performance, how she and the other Ailey dancers hung in the discos of Paris and the costume drama that ensued before the premiere performance of “Cry”. And that’s only the early part of her career. Read all about it on Ebonyjet.com.

I am so excited to announce that Chic Jones Media has become a media partner for SistaPac Productions—an entertainment production company that creates film, television, theater and interactive projects.. If you haven’t heard of this dynamic sister-led company you soon will. (Come back here often for all the details.)

Looking back 2009 seems like it was the ‘Year of the Conference’ for me. Last weekend I was feeling about conferenced-out and was going to skip Blogalicious—a gathering of women of color bloggers. So glad I didn’t skip it. I absolutely loved the experience because there was great energy, great networking and some good content as well. The trio also known asMama Law put this first annual conference together and they did a fabulous job.
Check out the videos below to see my interview with Justice Fergie, one of Blogalicious’ founders, a montage of the opening night festivities, as well as a performance by new artist Priscilla Renea and my interview with her. Can’t wait to go to Miami next year.

As you know, I followed Nicole Brewer and Damien Gurganious while they were contestants on “The Biggest Loser” this past season on That Black Girl Site (they were also guests on the fourth episode of That Black Girl Radio Show). They were known as ‘the engaged couple’. No more, now they’re the married couple. Yesterday, I got the chance to see my friends exchange vows and start their life together as a married couple. They both look great in their new bodies Nicole in her strapless tulle trumpet gown from Amsale which had the most incredibly dramatic train with and Damien in Calvin Klein designer suit (From Men’s Wearhouse) that didn’t come in his pre-BL size. In addition, Nicole wore elegant accessories from Diamond Nexus, drop “Dew Earring” as well a special piece called “The Wisdom of the Heart” ring (which contained a special hidden message) in memory of her deceased mother (who was also responsible for the great jewelry worn by the rest of the wedding party).

But family and friends were out in full force at The Renaissance in Long Island City to make sure the day was special. The bride’s brother, Eric, gave her away and life-long friends stood by their side. Other friends like, celebrity makeup artist Roxanna Floyd did their part too. Floyd gave the bride dramatic eyes and a more subdued lip for the occasion.

The new Mrs. Gurganious with celebrity makeup artist Roxanna Floyd

I was seated at the table called Biggest Loser Blvd with Jerry Hayes (who won the $100,000 at-home prize) and his wife Estella, Carla Triplett and her husband as well as Stacy and Adam Capers from Season 6. I may not have been on the show, but I am serious about keeping myself together. These folks are my inspiration.

The bride and "Biggest Loser" at home winner Jerry Hayes

Me with "Biggest Loser's" Carla Triplett

But that doesn’t mean I didn’t have some of the fabulous cake, aptly called the Biggest Loser’s Prailine Bliss” . It consisted of Vanila Bourbon-Prailine and Sweet Potato Orange layered cake fillied with Bourbon Candied Yams & Vanilla Prailine Buttercream. Yum, indeed. The cake which was created by Chef Rodney Love Jones of Bill Jones Epicure was decorated with fresh gladiola floral accent making it both beautiful on the outside and delicious on the inside.

Okay I am doing this in reverse order…I actually attended the National Speakers Association Conference right before I went to BlogHer and I can’t stress how amazing my experience was. First, I got to reconnect with two women I already knew: Francine Ward, who I met when I worked at Mode. She’s an NSA board member, attorney and author of the amazing book Esteemable Acts:10 Actions for Building Real Self-Esteem and Valorie Burton who used to pen a column for me when I was the editor in chief of Heart & Soul (the two of us are pictured above). It was Valorie’s first conference and she was one of the speakers who participated in “The Real Rally.” It was sort of like the BlogHer Community Keynote but everyone was an accomplished speaker but they had to get their message across in 20 minutes. Valorie is all about empowering women with the practical tools they need to succeed. She’s written a number of books including How Did I Get So Busy? The 28-Day Plan to Free Your Time, Reclaim Your Schedule and Reconnect with What Matters Most.

Secondly, I met so many amazing people who were willing to share their knowledge. Finally, I got a chance to learn some amazing techniques from the best speakers in the world. This was a great opportunity to hone my craft and I would definitely attend the conference again.

The ladies at BlogHer really know how to make things festive. After all the closing keynote and cocktail party most attendees headed across the street for “BowlHer”. Although the lanes were open I decided to check out some of the talent they had on hand. I’m so glad I did. Suai (pronounced Sway), who is a new artist on Universal Motown performed. She’s got a great voice and her musical style will give her an edge since some songs have a bit of a rock vibe (which I like). Check out some of the video I shot of Suai below.

Then it was off to CheeseburgHer. Yes a cheeseburger party where most attendees (myself included) wore a paper bag as a hat. It’s funny just thinking about it and funnier that I went. What a way to end a conference.

There were 21 women chosen to read their posts in front of scores of women during BlogHer 2009′s Community Keynote this year. Although my name appeared close to the top of the list in the announcement, I was actually number 19. There are some good and bad things about being so far down on the list. The first being that although I may have been initially nervous (okay terrified because we were backstage the entire time), I couldn’t sustain that level of craziness until I went on. By the time I went on I was totally calm. Although I could have become paranoid because every single woman that went before me was excellent. There were a lot of very personal posts that were quite poignant and had me fighting back tears. These women were so brave. (There’s a photo of me above but trust me I’m looking down and not asleep.)

But two of my favorites were from Julia D.’s “I Do Things So You Won’t Have To called “I Faked a Concussion” and from Danielle Henderson’s Knotty Yarn called “Stuck in the Middle With You”. They provided much needed comic relief in the midst of such raw emotions. Okay, so you’re probably wondering what I read. The committee chose a post I wrote back in May called When White Women Become Experts On Michelle Obama’s (And Our Hair). Catchy title huh? Anyway, because everyone else was so good I had to rise to the occasion and gave the best recitation (my grandmother’s word) of my life. I will never forget the experience, the amazing women I met and the encouragement and affirmation in the air.

For the complete list and links to the rest of the Community Keynotes check out fellow Keynoter Karen Waldrond’s blog Chookoolonks. She was #4 and the subject of her post was the other Obama, the POTUS.

Oh and when I get the video of my actual reading I will add it later.

Made my second appearance on The Marian Edwards Show today. What did we talk about ? When women are relegated to the ‘friend’ zone and how the notion of ‘friends with benefits’ really doesn’t benefit anyone. That’s was my point anyway but the brothers didn’t necessarily agree with me. But I really think that women need to wake up when it comes to lies we tell ourselves. When we engage in this ridiculous behavior we’re only hurting ourselves.

I am having such a great time at the Black Enterprise Entrepreneurs Conference. Today I got to spread the word on what I am doing on That Black Girl Site and My Black Girl Site with two great radio hosts, Warren Ballentine on “The Warren Ballentine Show” and Marian Edwards of “The Marian Edwards Show” who is on WOKB in Florida (but you can also listen to her online at www.themarianedwardsshow.com). Listen to my chat with Marian here; http://www.themarianedwardsshow.com/audio/CorynneCorbett.html.
I also gave my thoughts on the conference on The Black Enterprise Business Report. I’ll keep you posted about when it airs.

I hosted a reception with my friend Tracey Kemble for photographer Lanie McNulty’s powerful photography show called “Lifted Up in New York City” at the All Things Project at the Neighborhood Church of Greenwich Village. McNulty’s work captures the many way people worship and there were so many powerful images of people of color. Singer Afua Monk Addo sang with such power and passion that you could hear a pin drop when she sang. Then Phil Bingham tickled the ivories like no one else could. What an amazing night of inspiration.
