Corynne L. Corbett has spent more than twenty years encouraging and empowering women to look good and live well. She is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Chic Jones Media LLC, a company that builds communication and community between women. In May 2008 the company launched That Black Girl Site, a website and blog collective that covers a myriad of topics of interest to black women and features Corbett’s own blog, That Black Girl Blogging. And My Black Girl Site, a social networking site where sisters can connect and converse. In January 2009, Corbett began hosting That Black Girl Radio Show, a weekly internet radio show that takes an in-depth look at the issues, people, trends and topics that black women need to know more about. This fall, Corbett will launch The Grown Diaries, a site which will offer humorous observations, critical insights and practical ideas on being grown (or trying to get there). Hint: it has nothing to do with age. This site will expand upon the soulful musings and practical wisdom Corbett still offers on RealSimple.com, where she has been a popular Work & Life blogger since May 2008. Corbett also delivers her practical wisdom directly to women by appearing on both local and national radio shows as well as delivering speeches and participating in panels that focus on women’s wellness, self-esteem and empowerment issues.
Prior to making Chic Jones Media LLC a full-time endeavor, Corbett served as the Executive Editor of Real Simple. There she oversaw the fashion, beauty and food coverage for the monthly lifestyle title. She was also responsible for all staff development and served as the editorial liaison for Real Simple’s television show on PBS. Before assuming the role of Executive Editor, Corbett was the Beauty and Wellness Director for the magazine.
Corbett came to Real Simple after serving as editor-in-chief of Heart & Soul. Throughout her tenure there Corbett promoted physical, spiritual and emotional well being as a total life experience for African American women. She was a frequent guest on national and local radio programs monthly and also brought her wellness concept to audiences across the country as a featured speaker and panel moderator.
Before joining Heart & Soul, Corbett was the editor-in-chief of Mode, a publication that radically changed the landscape of fashion magazines with its focus on real-sized women as well as editorial director of Girl, a style magazine for black girls. Prior to holding the top post at Mode, Corbett held the posts of executive editor and senior editor there.
Previously, she had her own company, Corynne Corbett Creative Connections, through which she worked on projects that ranged from from freelance writing to advertising copy writing and special events. Corbett began her magazine publishing career at Elle magazine, where she worked her way up the ranks from editorial assistant to senior beauty, health and fitness editor.
Corbett is a graduate of Pratt Institute and is a member of the American Society of Magazine Editors and the National Association of Black Journalists.
